According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Spain is the world leader in both planted area and production of olive oil. Spanish olive oil represents approximately 60% of the production of the European Union and 45% of world production.
In addition, Spain is the first global exporter of olive oil. Olive oil is in fourth place of the food and agriculture products exported by Spain, behind citrics, wine and pork meat.
Exports represent more than half of total commerce of olive oil in Spain, with more than 100 destinations (the main markets are Italy, Portugal, USA, France, United Kingdom, China, Japan, Australia and Brazil).
Since 2014, Spain is the main olive oil exporter to the United States.
